Abstract

José Robles Pazos was an Associate Professor of Spanish at Johns Hopkins University born in 1897 and shot as a traitor by the Spanish Republican Government in February of 1937. The collection spans the years 1929-1940 and consists of correspondence regarding Robles' arrest, a contract for the Spanish translation of 13 books by H.L. Mencken, and two life insurance policies.

Abstract

This small collection contains photographs, a calling card, and letters relating to American novelist John Dos Passos (1896-1970). Included in the collection is a letter from Dos Passos to Spanish academic José Robles regarding Robles' translation of Dos Passos' novel Manhattan Transfer into Spanish. The papers range from approximately 1899 to 1922.

He was born in Chicago, Illinois, and he went on to Harvard College, graduating in 1916. He was well-traveled, visiting Europe and the Middle East, where he learned about literature, art, and architecture.
